http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~auntsissie/bolchcem.html "Last fall in October, 2006 a group of Bolch/Bolick descendants of Johann Adam Bolch/Bolick, Sr. and Anna Christina gathered to clean the old Bolch family cemetery located near Lyle's Creek. The cemetery is on land owned by the Superior Elastic Co and is located on Spencer Road between Springs Road and Hwy 70A, Hickory, NC. Directions to cemetery: On Interstate 40 from Asheville, get off at the Fairgrove Church Road exit, turn left on Fairgrove Church Road, go as far as you can go to a "T" intersection and turn left, turn right on Spencer Road. Go to the Superior Elastic Co. on the left (abt 1/2 mile) and park in the parking lot. You will have to walk down the hill on the left. There will be an orange gate, climb over the gate and head towards the right, you will find the cemetery in the trees. You can't see the cemetery from the road. This cemetery sits on land that Adam purchased from Henry Schmitt [Lincoln County, NC deed book 17 pg 176, 22 Aug 1788: Henry Smith & wife Christina (Mecklenburg Co) to Adam Bolek Sr (Lincoln Co); for 27 pds NC money sold 400 acres on South Branch of Lyle's Creek; border: PHILP ADAMS and "THE" WAGON ROAD, INCLUDES A SHOAL AND HIS OWN IMPROVEMENT, granted 21 July 1774 to HENRY SMITH signed HENRY SMIT & CHRISTINA SMIDIN'S (SIC) marks Witness Nelilhalin ? Diehl (german) & Jacob Diehl (german) recorded Jan 1795 Book 17 pg 167] and adjoins the land grant he received Sept 20 1779. Two of Adam's sons Sebastian and Casper inherited the land when Adam died. Sebastian inherited the Western or Northern side of Lyle's Creek, adjoin the land of George Adam Schmitt. Casper Bolch/Bolick, Sr. inherited in the Eastern or South side of Lyle's Creek where the cemetery is located. . . . So we have at least four of the sons of Adam Bolch/Bolick, Sr. that we know of represented in this cemetery. Adam Bolch/Bolick, Sr. and Anna Christina may very well be buried here; we just don't know for sure. Since Casper inherited the land, he and his wife Maria Magdalena Deal may also be buried here." Recollections of Harold Bolch, about 1940's: "Johan Adam Bolch/Bolick Family Cemetery Alongside Spencer Road, a two-lane road that runs between old State Highway 70 in Conover, North Carolina to Springs Road, in Hickory, North Carolina is a forgotten cemetery. Johan Adam Bolch's will states that he owned land lying and situated on the western and northern side of Lyle's Creek. Also land situation in the eastern and southern side of the creek which sets limit between the above. Also he owned a large tract of land north of a branch of Maclings [MacLin] Creek. He lived on an adjoining tract. States Grant, dated 20th day of October 1782. Also States Grant bearing date September 20. 1770 situated on both sides of Iko Creek divided by a line beginning across the said creek in the middle of the whole tract. "Conclusion: Since this cemetery is located in this area, near Lyle's Creek and Adam Bolch owned land on both sides of the creek, this cemetery was proably located on his original land. The earliest known buried (death) was 1857. The names on the tombstones were BOLCH and dates were after State's Grants September 20, 1770, October 20, 1782, and on July 21, 1774. He purchased additional land that had been held under a Royal Grant." http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/surnames.bolch/21/mb.ashx "Bolch/Bolick's of Lincoln/Catawba Co North Carolina Posted: 28 Jul 2007 3:38PM GMT Last fall a group of Bolch/Bolick descendants of Johann Adam Bolch/Bolick SR and Anna Christina gathered to clean the old BOLCH family cemetery located near Lyle's Creek. The cemetery is on land owned by the Superior Elastic Co and is located on Spencer Road between Springs Road and Hwy 70A, Hickory, NC. This cemetery sits on land that Adam purchased from Henry Schmitt Lincoln Co NC deed book 17 pg 176, 22 Aug 1788 Henry Smith & wife Christina (Mecklenburg Co) to Adam Bolek Sr (Lincoln Co); for 27 pds NC money sold 400 acres on SOUTH BRANCH OF LYLES CREE; border: PHILP ADAMS and "THE" WAGON ROAD, INCLUDES A SHOAL AND HIS OWN IMPROVEMENT, granted 21 July 1774 to HENRY Smith signed HENRY SMIT & CHRISTINA SMIDIN'S (SIC) marks Witness Nelilhalin ? Diehl (german) & Jacob Diehl (german) recorded Jan 1795 Book 17 pg 167 and adjoins the land grant he received Sept 20 1779. Two of Adam's sons Sebastian and Casper inherited the land when Adam died. Sebastian inherited the Western or Nothern side of Lyle's Creek, adjoin the land of George Adam Schmitt Casper SR inherited in the Eastern or South side of LYLE'S Creek where the cemetery is located. We know for certain that his son Solomon BOLCH is buried in this cemetery along with his wife Elizabeth BOLCH, dtr of John BOLCH (son of Sebastian) and Christina BOLCH (daughter of Adam JR). Solomon's son Wallis Alexander BOLCH b 6 Sept 1825 died 19 Feb 1857 married his cousin Ellenora BOLCH, dtr of my 3rd great grandfather Henry BOLCH who married Sally Hunsucker.Henry is the grandson of Jacob BOLCH and Maria Salome Grimes. Jonas may also be buried here. Also, many unreadable sand tombstones. So we have at least 4 of the sons of Adam SR that we know of represented in this cemetery. Adam Sr and Anna Christina may very well be buried here we just don't know for sure. Since Casper inherited the land he and his wife Maria Magdalena Deal may also be buried here. Three of Solomon's sons were killed during the civil war and we have received tombstones from VA and placed them in the cemetery. Thanks to Nancy Stedman Bolick, wife of Bruce Bolick and Bruce's cousin, Danny Bolick for placing the headstones in the cemetery, (both descendants of Jacob BOLCH and Maria Salome Grimes). Danny is also a descendant of Godfrey BOLCH SR. The following are the 3 sons of Solomon and Elizabeth BOLCH. Joseph BOLCH born 1831 died 19 March 1863 Richmond, Virginia who married Nancy Emeline Pitts children Sophronia supposedly married Nov 30 1873 John McDorgher but she also married a Mr. Holler as that's how she died, Sarah Elizabeth married Samuel May, William Pinkney married Caroline Mahala Fisher, Julia ann Frances married Bolton Pierce Bass Emanuel BOLCH born 1835 died 17 Aug 1862 Lovingston, Virginia who married Nancy Pauline/Perline Cline, dtr of Jesse Cline and Margaret Haas/Hauss. They had 1 daughter Susanna S BOLCH b 27 June 1861 Catawba died 3 July 1935 Lincoln Co married John L Gilbert (son of Daniel R Gilbert and Jane Heavner) 16 Aug 1888 Catawba Co. Nancy Cline married 2nd Jonas F Hawn. Nancy and Jonas are buried in the St Timothy's Lutheran Church cemetery. Susanna S BOLCH is buried in Hollybrook Cemetery, Section C , Lincoln Co. North Carolina. She had 6 children: Nancy Elizabeth marr Ephraim Monroe Hallman; Dovie married John Henry Elmore, Lola or Leila, Marshall Emanuel Gilbert married Addie Wilson Gray, Katie A., and Roscoe Lee married Mary Isabelle Tucker. This is new information I don't think anyone knows about. Israel Bolch/Bolick b 1840 died 12 Sep 1864, unmarried On Saturday, October 20th, 2007 we will be dedicating this cemetery and the three sons of Solomon for their civil war service. We plan to have a civil war re-enactment ceremony. We plan to do some further cleaning sometime in the fall, but we haven't set a date just yet. We also will be putting on final touches on the cemetery on Friday Oct 19th. We would like to fence the cemetery and are asking for donations to accomplish this. You may contact me to tell you where to send any donations. It would be nice as well if we could raise enough money to put a family memorial in there as well with Johann Adam SR and Anna Christina's children, since this was a part of his original property. All Bolch/Bolick descendants are invited to help us clean and preserve the cemetery, as well as attend the ceremony. I will provide the time once we have set it. Johan Wilhelm Diehl is thought to be buried behind the old church in the photo. There are many William Deals and other Deals buried in Catawba County cemeteries, but not one Diehl, so the whole clan must have adopted an anglicized version of Diehl. Roy Richard Thomas June 2007
