| Camberwell A short trip to Camberwell. |
| Penrose Street Penrose Street in the borough of Southwark is in the general area where Charles Penrose was born and raised. Before the 1880s the street appeared on maps as West Street or Hartford Place. |
| Looking along Penrose Street Penrose is a Cornish name. Some historians claim that all Penroses came from the same original Penrose family in Cornwall. Prominent 19th Century Penroses included Charles Vinicombe Penrose, a naval hero during the Napoleonic Wars. He died in 1830. One of his nephews was the English poet Matthew Arnold, whose mother was Elizabeth Penrose Arnold. So far there is no direct link between the family of Charles W. Penrose and the naval hero and the poet. |
| Camberwell Street In the early 1800s this area was a suburb of London known for its gardens and horticulture. |
| Camberwell today Today this area is a mix of older residences, green parks and modern buildings. |
| Kennington Station Underground station opened in 1890. |
| Drill Hall, Kennington Matilda Sims Penrose and the Parker family lived near here. |
| 296-98 Kennington Road today. Matilda Sims Penrose, Charles Parker and Matilda Penrose Parker lived here for several years. Charles had a tailor shop on the first floor and the family lived above. Currently the store front is called Oddbins, Wine Merchant Extraordinaire. |
Headstones
|
| Approximate Location of Penrose Grave Site The coping and headstone of the grave had been in good condition in 1907. At present most of the older grave markers had tumbled over. Some were covered with grass and moss, engravings unreadable. Many of the numbered grave marker stones were lost or unreadable, but we found a few of them and were able to figure out the approximate location.
Susan Woodland Howard is standing on the spot where she believes they are buried. |
| Condition of Parker/Penrose Grave site Most of the graves from the 1800s and early 1900s have nearly disappeared. This is a beautiful area in a good neighborhood, with the grave site protected under the shade of a spreading old oak tree.
The original headstone carried the inscription: "Matilda Penrose, Died May 1, 1887, age 82. Emma, daughter of above, died October 8, 1888. Matilda Eliza Parker, elder daughter of above, died April 11, 1906, age 73.
Charles Parker died 9 Mar 1921.

According to Charles W. Penrose Diary he visited his mother's grave site #10400 in the Old Camberwell Cemetery. According to the cemetery records Charles Parker owned the site and he is buried there along with his wife Matilda Eilza Penrose and Charles' and her mother Matilda Simms Penrose. The cemetery records said there was a marker on the grave. There had been floods in the area and either the marker is under mud or was washed away.
